That penalty was named after Panenka after the Czech forward made it famous during the 1976 European Championships for the then Czechoslovakia.

Sunday’s game sprung to life when Carrusca used a back heel to split the Phoenix defence open during a counter attack.

Tarek Elrich raced inside the box from the Carrusca pass and just when the ball appeared to be running away from the left back Phoenix skipper Andrew Durante’s mistimed lunge gave referee Peter Green an easy decision to make.

Carrusca fired in the spot kick with consummate precision to have Phoenix on the canvas.

But a minute after Carrusca’s brilliant spot kick Jeremy Brockie fired in a 15m shot which forced Eugene Galekovic into a brilliant save.

Phoenix ran out of ideas to penetrate Adelaide but it was a different story in the first half.

Phoenix played like a pack of wild dogs chasing the ball and wouldn’t let Adelaide stroke the leather around the ground.

Marcelo Carrusca Adidas Nitrocharge proved the difference for Adelaide.Source: Getty Images
Phoenix pressed Adelaide high up the park, forcing numerous turn overs as the Reds persisted with playing the ball out from defence.

Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick’s plan to unsettle the Reds paid dividends as Adelaide resorted to longer balls and tried to hit the home side on the break.

But after Phoenix forced six corners in the first half Adelaide eventually settled into a pattern.

Moss, however, only made one routine save from a meek Fabio Ferreira attempt.

But Adelaide was threatened to be robbed of its playmaker Carrusca before his wonder penalty.

A clash of heads with Vince Lia drew blood from the Argentine.

Carrusca resumed play a couple of minutes later but the injury didn’t deter the Argentine from having another first class match.

Carrusca instigated a number of forward moves as Adelaide favoured the right hand side of the park but Durante Adidas Predator shoes read every move as Phoenix’s last defender in the opening 35 minutes.

The balance of play then swung Phoenix’s way as Adelaide was thrown another scare when defender Nigel Boogaard landed heavily on his head after clashing with Manny Muscat.

After Boogaard re-entered the fray Phoenix exploited Adelaide with direct balls through the middle.

Muscat fed a superb ball for Stein Huysegems but the Belgian’s effort with the Reds defence beaten was brilliantly parried by Galekovic again after Adelaide succumbed to a straight ball through the centre on the stroke of half-time.
