  • I snuck in an update this afternoon that puts notifications up next to Account (top right corner).

Now what I really want to talk about, and what's really cool about the stuff I've been doing when I've had free time, is that it really lets you see whats going on on the site.

Notifcations right now do a few things:

    • Shows unapproved changes and reviews (if you have privs to do something about it).
    • Shows unread messages.
    • Shows updated favorites.

Now the last one is the biggy. I've built systems like this in the past, and I've learned a lot from it. Our favorites system is an extremely useful and generic system, which allows you to subscribe to a piece of content. It then can notify you when that content has been updated.

    So how does this work?

Go find an asset or a map that you like, and click the "Star" that you'll see. You MUST be logged in to see this. This will toggle it in your favorites (think of GMail). Now whenever that gets updated, it will be able to notify you (eventually, via email) that it's been changed.

The word "updated" is very loose however, in a good way. For example, if you edit the description on your project, most of the time, people don't care. In this situation "updated" means a new map was added to the project. The same thing goes for assets.

Now this will go even further soon (as soon as I tweak the design), where you can subscribe to threads, via favorites (think of it like a vbulletin forum). It's an easy notification to see when a new post has been made in a thread.

This also is nice so you can track down various things from the past. Even if you don't care when somethings been updated (and we might make the notification optional), you can tag it as a favorite, and it will show up in your Account -> Favorites.

Going even further, we're going to be implementing "Lists" (which are almost done), that allow you to create a playlist of your favorites. You could have a single favorite in any number of playlists, and any number of favorites in a single playlist. These will be publicly linkable as well, so if you have a collection of maps you want to share, or articles, then you have a simple way to do it.

Let me know if you guys have any feedback, and I hope you're enjoying all the updates in my free time (I know my girlfriend isnt :)
