linking series & versions

  • just as in staredit.net's database, nibbit's map pages should allow different versions of same map or different series to be linked.

it's better for mapmakers if they can make sure that people will get their latest releases rather than getting stuck with an older one.
    ----
    p.s.

i see that there r projects that include different versions of a series, but there should be a way to create a project without uploading a new map, but by adding maps that were already uploaded.

Yeah, you can currently do that - just attempt to upload the same file as an already uploaded one, and that map will be added to the project.

  • As long as the files hashes the same (you didn't edit it at all) it will add it to the project.

What is currently lacked is a system to point from an older version to the project page to find a newer version, even in such a way as to disable or obfuscate downloading the older version. Right now I just the map description to an 'old version' notice with a link to the project page, but this really should be automatic.

  • Now that we are moving closer and closer to real authorship on the site (its actually somewhat reasonable now), making maps point to their projects is becoming possible.

There's still a few kinks to work out, they're not big ones, but they're there. Once I deal w/ those we will add in some extra information on map pages to make people know that its part of X project and a newer version, Y, is available.

  • I just realized how messy some of my prior versioning was with my RPG.

Whats the word on being able to delete owned maps?

Probably not likely to happen with out a moderators approval. Will gladly poit out saying "hey this is part of my project, and you can get the newer version here" in bright bold flashing lettering, but not likely to remove archived maps unless theres a good reason.

  • This upcoming weekend I'm hoping to implement project-map linking. This is a bit different than how it works right now. The idea is, that if a map has an actual author, only a project owned by that author would be able to add it.

In these kinds of situations, and only these, we would tweak the map pages to have a new header, which would make it so users can recognize which maps are part of a larger project (and possibly have new versions).

The way I see it right now, will simply be a new bar to replace the title and details/edit/changes bars. It would include the same information, but also include a note about the latest version, and a link back to the projects page.

  • I was eager on this one, so I just tossed something together :)

Hopefully this helps out a great deal (and you dont have to relabel your maps ;)

  • That makes a huge difference. The version disclaimer stands out well in the orange though the 'part of *project*' bar is a little hard to spot at first, maybe a size bump could help that.

You hammer out the features, and I'll crank out the map versions to test them :D

  • I have a question. Creating a project gives the credit to me automatically, doesn't it? What if I want to create a project of series of maps (Neo Custom Hero Wars) that someone else made? How would it be managed?

It's something we could specify ownership to you, unless the author is a member of the site. They could always request it back.

So you'd want to create the project, add the maps to it, then (if they already were present on the site) you'd need to edit them, and specify "I am the owner of this map". This should mark them as part of that project, and then show new versions/etc.

  • Ok. I created the Custom Hero Wars project.

I uploaded the latest release 1.4d. I then uploaded 1.3h.

The 1.3h's page doesn't show a note that there's a newer version available, probably because it was uploaded before the project was created. Maps that were uplodaed after the project was created gives a link to 1.4d. This must be fixed.

Also on the project admin page, there must be a way for the user to organize the list order because currently the maps are listed by order of when they were uplodaed. This can get pretty messys in case of individual maps getting incorporated into projects.

It appears this is simply because you're not listed as the author of that other map. It will only link maps completely if you're author of both the map and the project.

  • I am not the author.

But I've registered the same author for all of the maps.

The 1.3h should link to 1.4d. Is there some way to do that?

  • I don't believe it was showing you as the author. Can you hit edit and select the option again and we'll get it approved.
