  • Even in defeat, the Winnipeg Goldeyes lowered their magic number to three. Wednesday night in front of 6,167 at Shaw Park, the Sioux City Explorers pounded out 15 hits and beat the Goldeyes 10-9. However, the Gary SouthShore RailCats beat the St. Paul Saints 2-1 so the Goldeyes still lead the wild card race by three games with five games left to play. After five solid pitching performances – two by Todd Privett and one each from Ace Walker, Chris Salamida and Matt Rusch – the Goldeyes four-game winning streak was stopped as Sioux City scored a run in the first, two in the second, three in the third, one in the sixth, two in the seventh and one more in the ninth. And they needed every one of those runs. "They (Sioux City) had a great night offensively," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. "They got good production from one through nine in their lineup. They all had good at bats. They played well. "We struggled to pitch today. We just werent crisp today. But the story was told on the field. They had a great night." The Goldeyes put up a four-spot in the first as Price Kendall walked, Chris Roberson singled, Barbaro Canizares walked Josh Mazzola singled home Kendall and Roberson, Luis Alen singled home Canizares and then Mike Coles singled home Mazzola. The Goldeyes got another run in the third as Mazzola singled, stole second, went to third on a ground out and scored on a ground out by Coles. Trailing 9-5, the Goldeyes got a run in the seventh as Price Kendall walked, went to second on a ground out, stole third and scored on a single by Yurendell de Caster. Winnipeg added two in the eighth as Alen led off with a double and scored on a single by Coles who eventually came around to score on a single by Kendall. With the score 10-8 heading to the bottom of the ninth, Roberson led off with a single and de Caster followed with a single that sent Roberson to third. By Canizares struck out, Roberson came home on a sacrifice fly by Mazzola and then Alen grounded out to end it. Mazzola had two hits, two runs scored and three runs batted in and now leads the Goldeyes with 71 RBI this season. Roberson, de Caster and Coles all had two hits each for Winnipeg. Roberson added had two runs scored and two steals while Coles had a run scored and three RBI. The Goldeyes finished with nine runs on 12 hits, but it just wasnt a good night for the pitchers. "We scored enough runs to win," said Forney. "But on a spot start day, we just didnt get it done." Amazingly, Sioux Citys Wally Backman Jr. was the only Explorers starter without a hit. Backman went zero-for-five and that put a halt to a league-best 24-game hitting streak. Starter Zach Baldwin (2-3, 6.61 ERA) suffered the loss for Winnipeg. Sioux City reliever Jon Plefka (1-3, 4.14 ERA) got the win. Andrew Snowden picked up his second save. The Goldeyes will play Game 3 of this four-game series with the Explorers at Shaw Park tonight. Ace Walker (9-4, 3.56 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg while lefty Richard Salazar (7-7, 4.29 ERA) will take the ball for Sioux City. Wholesale NFL Jerseys .
