  • PORTLAND, Ore. Terrell Suggs Womens Jersey . -- Danny Mwanga and Jack Jewsbury each scored, Portland tightened its sagging defence and the Timbers knocked off the league-leading San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 on Tuesday night. The Timbers (5-7-4) exhibited an attack that was lacking in Saturdays 3-0 loss at Colorado and the defence limited the damage from an inevitable San Jose second-half charge. The Earthquakes, with the best record in the MLS, played a patient but not particularly aggressive game, scoring their only goal after a quick restart where Portland seemed to lose focus. The Timbers are 5-2-2 at raucus Jeld-Wen Field. Mwanga, a product of Portlands Jefferson High and Oregon State, scored his first goal of the season off a beautiful cross from Franck Songoo in the 29th minute. Portland scored again in the 59th minute when San Jose keeper David Bingham bobbled a Futty Danso header, allowing Jack Jewsbury an easy poke into the net. "You can make the game a lot easier by outworking your opponent," Portland coach John Spencer said. "We made it a bit easier tonight by going up 2-0." It was the third meeting between the two clubs in MLS play. Both matches last season were 1-1 draws. The Timbers were happy to be off the road, where they have been shut out in four consecutive games. Portlands loss to the Rapids left it within striking distance of Western Conference basement dweller FC Dallas, and led to more grumbling from the influential Timbers Army about Spencers tactical approach. "A lot of people had questions for us after that loss in Colorado," Jewsbury said. "We wanted to prove to people and to ourselves that we had the fire." Tuesdays match was more reassuring. Despite trailing badly in time of possession (57 per cent to 43), the Timbers played with focus and were stout on defence, keeping San Jose captain Chris Wondolowski, who leads the league with 14 goals, from being much of a factor. Portland outshot San Jose 19-16. The Earthquakes are no strangers to comebacks, having scored 21 goals in the final 30 minutes this season, by far the best in the league. San Jose was fresh off a dynamic 4-3 victory over the L.A. Galaxy in which the Earthquakes scored the last three goals. But San Jose never did manage the same urgency against Portland. Marvin Chavez got to the Timbers with a nice boot into the back of net in the 74th minute when Portland didnt get back fast enough after Songoo was carted off with a leg injury. But even with the benefit of six minutes of stoppage time, the Earthquakes never seriously threatened again and the Timbers earned the upset. If the Timbers are going to capitalize on the win, its going to have to happen away from the supportive Jeld-Wen crowds, where they are winless this season. Spencer joked that owner Merritt Paulson would fly 15,000 local fans to Real Salt Lake for the next game on Saturday. "We proved we can do it here," Jewsbury said. "Weve got to show we can do it on the road." Justin Tucker Womens Jersey . -- Kurt Busch didnt want to talk about his future. The fifth-seeded Slovakian struggled in the first set, losing four consecutive games. But she broke Makarova in the 10th game of the second set to level the match and soon jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third set. "The surface is very much different from the one here last year, and its not the best surface I would say," Cibulkova said. "Last year it was much softer and it was like a gum. But now its very slow and very rough. It was not easy to get into the rhythm, thats why I had so many mishits in the first set." In the second round, Cibulkova will face Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria, who beat Varvara Lepchenko of the United States 6-0, 7-6 (3). Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan eliminated Russias Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2, 6-2. "With my tennis today, I had no chances against Yaroslava," Pavlyuchenkova said. "I made too many mistakes on my serve, while Yaroslava played aggressively and attacked from the first return." Also, Vesna Dolonc of Serbia made it into the final 16, rallyinng to eliminate Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan 1-6, 6-1, 6-4, while Alize Cornet of France defeated Anastasia Rodionova of Australia, 6-4, 6-3. Matt Elam Jersey. In the first round of the mens tournament, Alex Bogomolov Jr. upset fellow Russian three-time champion Nikolay Davydenko 7-5, 6-4. The two met two weeks ago in Beijing with Davydenko winning in straight sets in the first round. "Today, I won the first set and and was leading 4-0 in the second, but Nikolay didnt want to give up. I was lucky to win in straight sets," Bogomolov said. Davydenko saved two match points in the last game before sending a backhand cross just wide on the third. "Ive made too many mistakes in the match," Davydenko said. "But its positive that it was not my opponent who forced me to make mistakes -- I myself faulted trying to find my game. Its a pity, I wanted to play a good match but failed." Also, seventh-seeded Carlos Berlocq of Argentina rallied to beat Russian qualifier Andrey Kuznetsov 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, while Konstantin Kravchuk of Russia ousted Evgeny Korolev of Kazakhstan 6-4, 6-3, and Igor Sijsling of the Netherlands defeated Michael Berrer of Germany 7-6 (7), 6-3.
