  • TORONTO -- With the Toronto Blue Jays down to three regular outfielders, at least for the short term, Rajai Davis isnt about to waste his opportunity to play. J.J. Watt Signed Jersey . Davis started in left-field in the Blue Jays 8-6 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday after Eric Thames was demoted to triple-A Las Vegas earlier in the day. Davis finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs batted in. "I think any player thats in the major leagues want to play and contribute on a daily basis," said the 31-year-old. "For me to be able to do that is fantastic." Davis excels when hes starting, at least in batting average. Hes batting .273 in 418 major-league starts, while .260 in 189 games as a substitute. "Coming up through the minor leagues thats all Ive done," he said. "Ive had a pretty good track record with starting and playing regularly." This season Davis is batting .292 (14-for-48) with two homers and eight RBIs in 17 starts. In 19 games as a substitute he is batting .133 but has had only 15 at-bats and two hits in that capacity. "Its just a lot easier to pick out a routine for yourself and get comfortable in your routine," said Davis who is batting .254 with two homers and 10 RBIs for the season overall. "Its just nice to get this opportunity and take advantage of it with limited playing time." It is not certain how long the situation will continue. What began as a five-man outfield is down to three after Ben Francisco went on the disabled list with a hamstring injury and Thames was demoted. Thames was sent down to work on his hitting and also so that Mike McCoy could be promoted to provide some insurance in the middle infield with shortstop Yunel Escobar playing with a groin injury and second baseman Kelly Johnson playing with a hamstring injury. McCoy can also play outfield. The Blue Jays also are going with an eight-man bullpen instead of the usual seven after their relievers were overworked on a 1-5 trip. Davis, batting ninth in Tuesdays game, put down a bunt in the third inning with runners at first and second. It became a base hit because of his speed and then a run because Orioles starter Jake Arrieta overthrew to first. Davis drove in a run with a single in the fourth and had an RBI single in the fifth. He has been working on his hitting with batting instructor Dwayne Murphy. One of the things he does now is keep both hands on the bat as he follows through on the swing. "Im still working on it," he said. "Its still a work in progress." And he feels that perhaps a run of consistent starts will help that work progress. "I think its tough if you feel you have to go out there and be great just to play another day, putting pressure on yourself as opposed to knowing youre going to be out playing every day," he said. "Its a different mind set. Its easier on the player. "I guess Im able to get in a better routine for myself and mentally Im able to prepare a lot more effectively and that works for me." NEW YORK -- The NHL and the NHL Players Association resumed labour talks at the league offices in New York on Wednesday. The two sides held a cordial meeting for more than two hours in another round of negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement before the current one expires on Sept. 15. Executive Director Donald Fehr said the NHLPA has not yet decided to make a counteroffer to the leagues initial proposal last week. "We requested further information," Fehr said. "The initial proposal we are looking hard at. "Were not at that stage (to submit a counter) yet. At the appropriate point in time, well make our proposal." There were multiple reports coming out of the last round of talks that the owners offer included players hockey-related revenues get slashed from 57 per cent to 46 per cent. It also was reported that players would be forced to wait 10 years before becoming unrestricted free agents and that contracts would be limited to five years. Fehr said the NHLPA would submit a proposal "at the appropriate point in time." He did not specify when that would be. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said the leagues offer last week was a "serious proposal." "We have a lot of work to do," Bettman said, "and a relatively short time" to get a deal done. The two sides will meet again Thursday and Friday in New York. They are also scheduled to meet Tuesday, Thursday and Friday in Toronto at the NHLPA offices next week. "There is a dialogue going on," Bettman said. "(Were) focussed on making a deal. Arian Foster Signed Jersey. . Focused on getting a deal done." Bettman oversaw the 1994-95 NHL lockout that delayed the start of the season and forced a 48-game regular-season schedule. When labour problems lingered in 2004-05, Bettman shut down the league. It took years for the NHL to recover from the lost season. Wednesdays session was well attended by players, including New York Rangers forward Brandon Dubinsky. "Like anything, it is a negotiation. (We) have to work with them," Dubinsky said. "(Its been) cordial. Thats the way it should be. There hasnt been any hostility." Dubinsky was joined by New York teammate Henrik Lundqvist, as well as Patrice Bergeron (Bruins), Jason Chimera (Capitals), Rick DiPietro (Islanders), Kyle Okposo (Islanders), Manny Malhotra (Canucks), Kevin Shattenkirk (Blues), James van Riemsdyk (Maple Leafs), Antoine Vermette (Coyotes), Kevin Westgarth (Kings), Dan Winnik (Sharks), J.T. Wyman (Lightning), and Philadelphias Scott Hartnell and Ruslan Fedotenko. "(I) dont have any expectations," Fehr said. "Things move at their own pace." Fehr is very protective of the players prerogatives under the National Labor Relations Act. He believes players are effectively 50-50 partners with owners over anything that affects their work rules, such as realignment, which stalled last season after the players association refused to agree to the changes. The NHL regular season is slated to start on Oct. 11. ' ' '
