WINNIPEG - Milt Stegall is looking forward to one last cheer from the fans in Winnipeg where he played his 14 CFL seasons when he gets inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and Museum. The receiver is one of five players and two builders who will be inducted at a ceremony in Winnipeg in November. "I always tell people thats the one thing I miss about football," he said Tuesday at the old Bomber stadium where the team will be playing one final season. "The high that I would get from those fans and seeing my jersey and everything, No. 85 up in the stands, so Im really looking forward to that. I dont know how excited Ill be. I might even shed a tear." The other players are former Saskatchewan offensive lineman and placekicker Jack Abendschan, quarterback Damon Allen, running back Eric Lapointe and the late linebacker Tyrone Jones. Allen played for six different CFL teams and retired in 2008 as professional footballs all-time leading passer, although he since lost the title to Anthony Calvillo. Jones died in 2008 and also played some of his best years with the Bombers, including two Grey Cup wins in 1984 and 1990. Lapointe was a star running back with the Mount Allison Mounties of the CIAU from 1995-98 who went on to play for the Montreal Alouettes The builders are B.C. Lions owner David Braley and former University of Calgary coach Peter Connellan. Stegall holds a long list of CFL records from a career that ran from 1995 to 2008. He said hes glad his mother will finally get a chance to wear her fur coat in Winnipeg when she comes for the ceremony, and he has been to the Hall of Fame and will go again when his bust arrives. "It needs some upgrades," he said, earning a laugh. "But no, one time when we were out we had an eastern swing, we were in Hamilton for an extra three or four days, myself and Harold Nash went in there. Its nice seeing the busts there, so when my bust gets in there, anytime Im in Toronto Ill definitely make a ride out there, Im excited about that." Canada finished with a time of three minutes, 17.915 seconds. “It really feels amazing," said Whitten. "We had to regroup (from yesterday) and Im really proud of how the team came together today. We were just fighting the whole way and its just amazing to have done it." "We made a decision to use the energy of the crowd. Its so loud, you can either let it distract you or feed off that energy." Whitten, along with Jasmin Glaesser and Gillian Carleton, beat the Australian team by a margin of 0.181 seconds to claim third place overall. The trio earned Canadas first cycling medal of London 2012. "We knew it was going to be a battle," said Glaesser, about the race against Australia. "We know they start off fast but we knew it was going to come down to the last lap. It was a challenge but we were 100 per cent committed to do our best." Canada took an early lead, before losing time to Australia coming to the finish of the first 1,000 metres. The times stayed incredibly close, but Canada came out ahead with a strong pull by Whitten. "We knew that if we paced ourselves really well and saved ourselves for the end and have a strrong finish we would have a chance," said Glaesser.dddddddddddd Great Britain won a third gold medal in the London 2012 Velodrome, beating the American team with a time of 3:14.051, a new world record. The Americans finished nearly six seconds back of the winners. "We did it," said Laura Trott of Great Britain. "We didnt expect a world record in every round." Carleton fractured her pelvis at a World Cup stop in November, but recovered to rejoin the team early in 2012. Glaesser is German born, but became a Canadian citizen in September 2011. The Canadians qualified fourth fastest in the opening round of the event, matching up against powerhouse Great Britain in the semifinals. Although Canada was beaten, their time was fast enough to qualify for a shot at the bronze medal race. Canadas team has been racing together for just one season, but have already shown considerable talent, winning a silver medal at the London World Cup, and a bronze medal at the World Championships. The only other Canadian woman to earn an Olympic medal was Lori-Ann Muenzer, in the womens sprint at Athens 2004. Whitten will continue her Olympic competition in the womens Omnium, starting August 6. New Zealand beat the Netherlands by nearly four seconds to claim fifth place. Belarus finished seventh, beating the German squad. ' ' '
