• AIGLE, Switzerland -- Italian cyclist Leonardo Bertagnolli retired within hours of learning he could face disciplinary action for suspected blood doping. Authentic Clay Matthews Jersey . The International Cycling Union requested a hearing for Bertagnolli on Wednesday, and soon after the 34-year-old announced his retirement. If a formal charge is brought, it would be the first such case opened since May 2010 based solely on a riders biological passport results. Bertagnolli never failed a doping test but is suspected of doping because of fluctuations in blood values in samples collected over several years. The governing body says Bertagnolli has "the presumption of innocence" until charged. Bertagnolli later said in a statement that the Campionatio Italiano -- in which he finished 16th -- was the last race of his career. The decision had been made with the staff at Team Lampre at the beginning of the season. Bertagnolli won a stage at the 2009 Giro dItalia, and the San Sebastian one-day classic in 2007. Lampre says in a statement that the "potential violations" dated to 2008-09, before Bertagnolli joined the team. Bertagnolli was set to be questioned on Wednesday by Italys anti-doping prosecutors about alleged links with Michele Ferrari, a doctor who in 2002 was banned for life from the sport by the Italian Cycling Federation.
