Ennis broke away from the pack late and won the 800m - an event that was just a formality - as she went wire-to-wire to the capture gold medal and establish a new national heptathlon record at the London 2012 Olympic Games. She becomes the first Brit to win an Olympic athletics gold in London in 104 years. Canadian Jessica Zelinka finished in seventh place. Upon completing the race, she hugged fellow Canadian Brianne Theisen, who finished in 11th. Ennis, one of Great Britains medal hopefuls, was quickly associated as one of the faces of the Games, and did not disappoint from the moment she kicked off her events in front of a raucous home crowd at Olympic Stadium. She got to business early, blazing to a win in the 100m hurdles in her first event, and did it in a world-best time of 12.54 seconds. She continued to pile on points with both consistency and brilliance: on top of the world-best time, she finished second in two otherevents (long jump, 200m) and did not finish outside the top 10 in any event-including her two weakest, shot put and javelin. When she won the 800m, she collapsed to the track in joy, and was quickly adorned with the British flag as she took her victory lap. She finished with 6955 points, breaking her own record and distancing herself from the nearest competitor by 327 points. Tatyana Chernova, who started the day in ninth place after four events, climbed all the way back to claim the silver medal. Ukrainian Lyudmyla Yosypenko took the bronze, narrowly edging out Lithuanias Austra Skuyjtye, who was in second place heading into the final race. Zelinkas hopes of capturing a medal were dashed when she was forced to play catch-up after the second event - the high jump - when she cleared just 1.68m. But the 30-year-old battled back into contention, putting together back-to-back personal best performances in both shot put and the 200m, which had her in third place at the end of the first day. But even with a season-best long jump mark of 5.91m to start the second day, it was only good enough for the 23rd best distance, sending her to 10th overall. Her javelin throw of 45.75m pushed her back to eighth, and a second place finish to Ennis in the 800m landed her in sixth. "I got a second chance after day one, but I just couldnt do it. Im so sorry. It was a hard race, but we are all pleased for Ennis," she said. "I really need a hug from my dad." It was the second time Ennis edged out Zelinka for first during the competition. Zelinka picked up a personal-best time of 12.65s to finish behind Ennis in the 100m hurdles. Her final score of 6480 is 10 points less than her score when she finished fifth at Beijing 2008, and is off her national mark that she set this year of 6599. Theisen, making her first Olympic appearance, finished the heptathlon with 6383 points, 10 points off her personal best score.
