• TORONTO -- Marlies head coach Dallas Eakins doesnt mind making tough choices when it comes to who hell start in goal for each game. Drew MacIntyre made 28 saves while Ryan Hamilton and Joe Colborne each scored shootout goals as Toronto beat the Binghamton Senators 2-1 in AHL action Sunday afternoon. It was MacIntyres third win in five games since being signed by the Marlies on Feb. 13. Toronto also has Mark Owuya and Jussi Rynnas as options in goal. "Absolutely ... we love difficult decisions," said Eakins. "No one wants to make the easy ones. We want these players pushing each other and (MacIntyres) come in and done that and definitely start the conversation." Out of five Senators players MacIntyre faced in the shootout, Dustin Gazley was the only one who managed to beat him. He made a glove save off the Senators final shooter Cole Schneider. "As a goalie you take that personally when you lose in a shootout," said MacIntyre, who gave an emphatic fist-pump after stopping Schneiders shot for the win. "When it got to the shootout I really wanted it. It was how you get the win." Greg Scotts goal late in the second period for Toronto (29-19-6), which defeated Binghamton for the first time in four meetings this season, including a 4-2 loss on Saturday. Gazley had the regulation goal for Binghamton (33-17-6). With the win, the Marlies opened up a two-point gap ahead of the Abbotsford Heat for first place in the AHL Western Conferences North Division. Toronto changed little after Saturdays loss to the Senators. The difference, according to Eakins, came from an improved defensive performance. "We wanted better execution today. We didnt change anything system-wise," said Eakins. "We thought we had the better chances last game so we just kind of stuck with our same game-plan. We were just able to defend a little bit better." Binghamton jumped in front at 4:24 of the first when Jean-Gabriel Pageau found Gazley alone. The winger had time to wait and pick his spot before going high above MacIntyres left shoulder. Toronto tied it at 16:58 of the second when Scott came into the slot, snapped a shot through traffic and past Senators goalie Nathan Lawson. It looked as though Carter Ashton deflected the puck in, but a review showed Scotts shot went untouched for his fourth goal of the season. After being outshout 20-10 through two periods, the Senators came on strong in the third period but MacIntyre made 13 saves in the period to preserve the tie. In keeping his team in the game, MacIntyre also had some help from his teammates who blocked shots and gave him the chance to see a number of shots clearly, allowing him to make relatively easy saves. Its something MacIntyre was quick to acknowledge. "It felt good tonight and I only have numbers because we were good defensively," he said. "They block shots and do all those little things so thats why I have good numbers." Lawson made 27 in regulation for the Senators. The Marlies are now off until Wednesday when they host the Syracuse Crunch on Wednesday morning. Notes: Attendance was 6,635. a Sunday was Canadian Armed Forces Appreciation Day. The union, which filed the motion Tuesday on behalf of New Orleans defensive end Will Smith, Cleveland linebacker Scott Fujita, and free agent defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove, argues the players will suffer irreparable harm if they are forced to miss games while their case against the league proceeds. Suspended Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma had already filed a similar motion when his full-season suspension began earlier. The other three players suspensions began this week. The players ultimately want their suspensions thrown out because they argue the disciplinary process was fundamentally flawed and unfair. U.S. District Judge Ginger Berrigan, who is hearing the case, has said she found the leagues handling of the bounty matter to be unfair to the players and their punishments excessive, but she has also said she is not yet comfortable that federal courts have jurisdiction to rule on a process that was collectively bargained between the union and the league. She has already indicated, in response to Vilmas earlier request for a temporary restraining order, that she was inclined to wait until players had exhausted their remedies under the leagues collective bargaining agreement before she ruled. Still pending on that front is a decision by a threee-member panel that last week heard arguments in the NFLPAs appeal of a system arbitrator Stephen Burbanks ruling that Commissioner Roger Goodell had the authority both to punish the players and hear their appeal in the bounty matter.dddddddddddd The union had argued that because actions alleged in the bounty matter happened on the field, the leagues labour agreement calls for someone other than the commissioner to hear players appeals of the commissioners disciplinary action. The three-member panel has indicated that it hoped to rule by this week. If it rules in favour of the players, Berrigan would have no reason to act. The NFL has said its investigators have concluded that the Saints ran a bounty program from the 2009 through 2011 seasons. The league said the program offered improper cash bonuses to defensive players for hits that injured opponents. The players have admitted to a pay-for-performance program for big plays such as turnovers and big, clean hits, which also is banned but cannot be punished by suspensions. However, they have denied, some under oath in federal court, that there was a pay-to-injure program. In addition to the four players suspended, the league also suspended Saints head coach Sean Payton the entire season, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis for half the season, and Saints assistant head coach Joe Vitt for six games. Former Saints defensive co-ordinator Gregg Williams, who is now with St. Louis and allegedly administered the bounty pool, has been suspended indefinitely. ' ' '
