  • I'm not sure if this is a serious post, but here in Brazil it's 2°C hotter than the avarage for this time of the year, and this means we have days with 42°C or even hotter.

Most of our states had the hottest day in fifty years all in one week.

  • My opinion on it is that an increase of CO2 in the atmosphere is very likely to cause a slight degree change. What I am more interested in is whether this may just be a normal fluctuation of the temperature on the earth or whether as humans we really have caused a globe increase in temperature.

By normal fluctuation I mean that the earth does go through points where it will be hotter and then it will cool. We can see this temperature variation in ice from the arctic.

  • I don't believe in Global Warming being caused by human factors.

  • I don't really think anything disasterous will happen, but our planet goes through "warming and cooling" stages all the time. See: Ice Age

Either way we're kinda in the time period where we're just like eh **** it.

  • I'm not sure if it's caused by human factors, I believe that humans are destroying the planet in various ways. I live in Brazil and i can tell you that yes, we're cutting down our rain forest to open space for cattle and to make furniture.

    ..which is pretty sad =/

  • I think its all a lot of hype. I lived with a guy who almost cried cause someone put a small box in the garbage and not the recycling. People need to chill.

  • I would never have called it Global Warming, but rather Climate Shift/Change.

Because regardless of the apparent "warming" there seems to be far more cold days here then usual, and lots of snow throughout the many months.

  • The result of global warming will be both, hot and cold extremes. It's already showing in increasingly fluctuating weather, but people won't act untill they feel the fury of nature on their own skin. Whatever the cause is we can't afford NOT to act!

  • People should be more concerned with the impending polarity shift that the earth goes through every 150,00 years or so, it has been 700,000 years from the last one. The magnetosphere will be reduced letting spots of direct sun radiation saturate the surface of the planet. Killing everything. Look it up, there are already signs of spots over the Atlantic ocean that planes can't fly through. Its only been there for a couple of years.

Could this be causing weird weather?

  • Its already been proven that, the polarity shift event woudlnt truly affect the world.

  • Why do people believe that global warming will cause temperature extremes? That makes no sense. Show me some proof. Not, "omg it hotter global warming, omg its colder global warming

  • Meh, I don't think that it is that big of a deal. It's a natural process, Mars is warming too. Sure we might be contributing to it, but I don't think that this is the end to the humans. One thing that I don't like is the rain forest cutting down part. We srsly need plants to survive, and we are killing animals for paper and crap...

  • Are you people blind? Turn on TV, or better yet, go out and observe the nature! There are storms and hurricanes everywhere, UK and US totally froze this winter, with huge snow blizzards, so many earthquakes, avalanches and floods just in the past few months...

You can't deny the climate is changing. Even here in central EU I can see the difference, winters are getting colder and summer is crazy hot. And the transition between them is getting shorter too, for the last few years we had a very short spring.

But again, people won't start to act untill they feel the changes on their own skin, and it will already be too late by then.

  • @Phtes. Where did you hear that? Polar Shift is a hypothesis in the first place so to say that it has been proven is misleading? I would like to read what your reading.

I found this, but I remember seeing it on the discovery channel :p

"could create calamities such as massive floods and large scale tectonic events"

The weather is weird and that is what isn't weird. Weather staying the same for 150,000 years is weird. ST said it, the earth changes.

  • Frozen Wolf: Natural disasters are not solid scientific evidence for global warming. Do you think these things did not happen long before industrialization had taken place? Archaeologists will tell you that thousands of years ago (how many is debatable) North America was completely frozen over. Natural climate change occurred, as many others have already commented on. Do you believe that the people living in North America before the existence of automobiles or the common knowledge of production of fire caused global warming? If so, what would you propose their devices of malice were. If not, then should the melting of an entire ice blanket over an entire continent not being constituted as global warming completely nullify the claims that temperature change of a few degrees is going to be the end of humanity? I believe that it should. This is more of a pontification, as someone before me commented on ice ages.

This is not to say that man does not adversely affect the environment. Being conscious of how humans are affecting the things we survive off of is a valuable trait.

  • Nick88389, Most of the drastic climate shifts in earths history have been driven by one or more forces. One of the great shifts was caused by thousands of volcanoes that use to populate the African planes. They released extreme amounts of chems into the air, co2 being a major one. Now we dont have thousands of volcanoes pumping out co2, but we do have factories and cars All over the whole GLOBE, pumping out co2, and we have been doing it for AGES. If we WEREN'T effecting the climate, do u really think the governments of the world would be taking the measures they are now ? Even china has lowered its co2 footprint since the global talks. Its not fiction, we have effected the climate on earth. That doesn't mean we have DESTROYED earth, earth will regenerated from this, even if every single living thing died.

And for the people who cant grasp how warming can cause heavier snowstorms, let me explain.
Snow = Evaporated water + cooling
Higher Global Temps = High Evaporation Rate
igh Evaporation Rate = More water in the air
    More water = More snow

Another factoring that is increasing the cold weather is the north pole. Because global temps have rised, the north pole can no longer get cold enough to hold the cold air around it, so the air leaks out down into USA,EU etc. This colder air , mixed with more water in the air, means heavy snowstorms.

  • DrakenZA: So it's getting hotter and colder: Hotter to evaporate the water, and colder to condense it into frozen particles. That seems very logical. The light is on and off at the same time. Most of the "green house effect" (36–70%, depending on where you are on the earth) is caused by water vapor (H2O(g)). Maybe we should get rid of that? Going with your previous logic, that seems like a sound decision. The only major reason CO2 has built up in the atmosphere is because of deforestation. Human builds car, human needs road for car, human cuts down many trees and plants to make road for car, human drives automobile on road. Now multiply that scenario by the square miles of highway humans have created. Humans replace oxygen generating plants with carbon dioxide generating automobiles. If you genuinely believe in global warming, I do not believe you should be trying to build some logical fortress of fallacies as to what the results of global warming are (such as the earth is getting hotter and colder at the same time), but perhaps you should be worrying more about how you are going to purchase land from large businesses in order to plant more trees that may convert your "green house gases" into what you may consider to be a more beneficial molecule: oxygen (O2). However, CO2 is not the only "green house effect" causing molecule. Methane and Nitrous Oxide are yet others, which are produced by livestock. I would assume you are in the boat with this guy:

“Livestock are one of the most significant contributors to today’s most serious environmental problems,” senior UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) official Henning Steinfeld said. “Urgent action is required to remedy the situation.”

I am sure you would enjoy having less food. This sounds like a wonderful idea. We should let some people starve for the benefit of others. Who would you choose to be able to eat, and why would you choose them. What factors decide a person's right to eat food?

  • global warming is happening because of man and also the earths magnetic field is slimming down because of the earths core and is allowing more heat from the sun to enter out atmosphere and will heat up the planet.

  • There is a reason why the majority of those in the scientific community agree on the reality of climate change.

You make think that recent emails have shown otherwise, but that is just not the case. There's an overwhelming amount of evidence for global warming. There's always going to be a few studies that have conflicting data. Still, in the broader picture, even if it was fake or real, taking care of your planet is never a bad thing.

  • We're fucked, we're all fucked, so don't worry about any of it.

Human kind will not change to save themselves.

There's not a doubt we're going through natural warming cycles, the problem is that in that process, we're also accelerating it exponentially as population grows because of our habit for burning fossil fuels.

If you don't believe humans can contribute to this, you're a fucking waste of the oxygen on this earth because you have the IQ of a moronic tadpole. The earth is small the population is huge and our methods of getting around are simply sorry given the level of technology human kind has attained.

Anywho, Im not gonna rant anymore because it's a lost cause, we're already too late, the earth will do what it does best, get rid of the baggage, and then it will repair itself when we're finally gone. Thank God, if there is one.

    Lol.

  • Nick88389: You've got some pretty serious fallacies going, yourself. Here's one of my own: people who've learned about stuff like fallacies are more likely to use them. Anyway, on to hopefully non-fallicious counterpoints.

You don't seem to understand how weather works. The three biggest factors, as I understand it, are the sun, wind currents, and ocean currents. The Earth mostly absorbs energy from the sun in the equator. This energy does not magically, instantly get equally distributed among the whole planet; the air and water get heated up and, with the currents, move toward the poles. When the air/water gets cold enough, it sinks, and comes back around. More heated air at the equator means stronger currents not only to the poles but BACK, meaning hotter hot weather and colder cold weather. However, the more intense this process, the faster the ice caps melt, and once the caps are done melting, then the currents slow to a crawl or even stop, and then we really do experience global warming on a painful scale.

Your statement about livestock was also radically fallicious. You apparently assume that the only food that people can eat is meat. I won't even get into "how do the animals eat, then?" There are many factors why raising animals to be eaten are a bad idea; I'll just bring up two for sake of concision.

First is of course the greenhouse gasses. Hmm, should we grow the stuff that has a byproduct of oxygen, or the one that spews out methane? Second is the sheer energy inefficiency of livestock. I don't know the exact numbers, but basically, if you could either give a village one cow, or all the grain it would take to raise that cow, the village would live a lot longer on the grain.

So please. Don't imply that cutting back on or even stopping the domestication of animals for food would be making anyone starve, or even be a bad idea at all.
