Interesting problem + deleting own maps
submit to reddit

  • Thanks to Nibbits disliking any protection other than Uberation 2, and Uberation 2 crashing my map in SC, I've got a little bit of a predicament. Either the map works on nibbits, or the map works on SC, and I've tried every protector from ProEdit to the protection part of SC Map Cracker.

Further, thanks to these bugged uploads, I've got 2 versions of D:E .92 which do not function, and have no way to remove them. May I suggest we be able to remove our own authored maps? And if not can I get them taken down? I'll be putting up .92b/.93 as soon as I find a non-crashing protection which doesn't disagree with Nibbits.

  • Can you link the versions on here which do not work?

    http://www.nibbits.com/sc/maps/view/130615/
Both crashed when used in Starcraft.

Any ETA on modifications to the uploader so that other protections may be accepted? Or is that not a priority or whats going on exactly? .-.

Thoughts on being able to delete our own authored/uploaded maps? Really is needed. What if someone accidentally uploaded the wrong copy of a map, one of their open ones? Can't afford to have that up where someone could just snatch it.

The protection stuff is actually quite the pain in the ass to fix sometimes. Some of it requires Library A to work properly (which does, most of the time), and some require Library B to work properly. Most likely I'm just gonna let certain cases bypass the "this is not a valid map" (as long as it looks somewhat valid), and require the author to fill in stuff.

In regards to map deletion. I don't plan to implement a simple "delete my map", but rather a "I'd like to have my map removed.". The idea is really to stop people from removing stuff from the database when it should really be there.

On that note, I went ahead and removed those two broken versions from the site.

  • Could authors/uploaders be able to disable downloads, at least for a period of time then? This would be in order to stop an upload mistake from being spread. Sort of like the active map in a project, but deactivating a map's download instead.

Thanks for the help thus far.

Apparently this one didn't fail the upload as Nibbits told me, needs to be removed as well for not working properly in SC.

I think flagging could actually do that. Say we get a report or whatever from a trusted user (someone with >N level) we automatically disable that or mark it in some way until its moderated.

  • You know you could try playing a map a few times before uploading it on nibbits to avoid putting crappy/buggy versions of your map up.

Also I use proedit and it hasn't caused any problems with map previews. A lot of it depends on what features of a map protector you use. I've found ubernation to be very good at messing up my maps strings.

  • Hm.

Nibbits continues to intrigue me with how exactly the uploader works.

I had a friend of mine, O)Farty1Billion, maker of TinyMap, throw together a protection utility that removes editor used sections only, leaving all SC related sections intact and unmodified.

Nibbits still failed to upload this map.

Cramer, is there any information you could give me that I could pass along that might help us make this tool Nibbits compatible?

I've uploaded it here if you wish to take a look at it:

  • I'll try to get you some more information on it. It's a bit complicated, and it works around some protection issues. It's pretty much the ones where it messes with triggers/etc that it fails to parse completely.

Right now if it can't read the tileset, or tiles, it will just say "ok, so we cant generate that info, who cares".

  • Hey Cramer, I know you've been pretty busy but if you could get me that information and such soon, it'd be cool. Farty is working on his new compressor and I'd like to try and make it Nibbits compatible.

  • I'll try to get you a response in the next couple days.

I'm fairly happy Nibbits has been able to run itself the last few weeks, as I think in the future I won't have much more time for a while :)
